I started in June this idea of a Summer camp in the form of a slow chat to replace our weekly Twitter Chat. A sudden inspiration for a crowd-sourced work leading to a usable repository on practices around Learning, Sharing, Knowledge Management.

The project is now live and online! It will remain at this permanent place, you can bookmark it. I placed it below the KPMOrg folder. Read more about this project.

We had several interesting discussions so far.

Conversations tend to become more intense around 10 PM UTC. It seems that the usual time of #PKMChat is also the time most tweeps are ready to chat.

Organization of the table

The goal of the table and the layout is to encourage exploration and discovery. Depending on what you search you can instinctively direct yourself toward the right region, without narrowing your point of view as you would do with a database driven search. It’s both organized and visual.

It didn’t change much yet. I suggested the organization and so far it has not been an obstacle. Still we can see that cards tend to accumulate on the leftmost side. When it will be time to fine tune the order, the criterias may have to be refined.

Card

A Card = a symbol, a location, a color, a drawing and a very short definition.

Each card displays a short name for the activity. 3 letters was necessary to reuse existing acronyms or shorthands and avoid reinventing new acronyms. So the parallel with the chemistry periodic table fails here. When it is an acronym all letters are uppercase, when it’s a shorthand only the initial letters are uppercase.

A color is associated with columns. As the number of columns will grow, some colors may span over several columns. This will occur as we add the organizational KM processes starting row 4. So a sub-table will be redrawn below to show the intermediate columns without stretching too much the existing table. The same trick was was used in the chemistry periodic table.

I suggested, to attach to each card a small drawing. It could be a hand drawn simplified drawing like sketch-note practitioners are inventing for their ideas library. Do you have some ready? feel free to submit them. Your symbol for CoP, Mentoring or Coaching could achieve stardom.

Detailed page

Behind each card, there is a GoogleDoc in the “PeriodicTableElements” folder below the #PKMChat shared folder. The document is fetched automatically, formatted and displayed as a modal box. There is no need for the visitor to access GoogleDoc. For authors , it’s nice to have a well designed environment to write. A form would have been limiting and cumbersome.

It’s in this document that the knowledge shared becomes deeper, more textual, more actual.

All paragraphs are optional, extensible. Here is a list that can be found on several cards:

Definition: A short definition and possibly a quote. Participants: who are the active participant(s). Beneficiaries: who else could benefit from the activity (more passively). Benefits for the participants: Self-explanatory. Benefits for others: id Affinities: which other activitites play well with this one, before, after, concurrently. People: handles or blogs of people who regularly share their knowledge or experience on this topic. Links: nice posts or web site containing reference information. Books: good books on the topic, reference or applicable. Twitter Chats: past twitter chats on this topic (#PKMChat or others). Curated Links: more links on Diigo. Recent tweets: interesting tweets on the topic. Hashtags, keywords for searching about it.

A card as it is right now

Future Plans

The experience will continue for 3 more weeks. I wish to encourage participants to add people to follow for each cards, handles of chats where news can be found, contacts made. Ultimately I wish also to collect affinities between activities. This could lead to some nice UI on the page where when we pass the finger over a card, the cards with affinities light up. This would give ideas of combinations of activities that could be tried or encouraged.

PKMChat on the Periodic table will take place again this Wednesday 5th, then again on the 12th, and the 19th. We will be back to our usual #PKMChat starting August 26th.

It’s a slowchat but the hashtag #slowchat is not necessary, just use #PKMChat as usual. You will have responses it’s just that it could take a few hours.

Enjoy and participate! at your rhythm, share your knowledge.
