Learning by Doing

We learned during the chat on Sense-Making that doing, experimenting was necessary to good sense-making. Doing is also part of Working Out Loud, our topic from last May. I heard a lot about Learning by Doing as the new Graal, the fix for short attention spans. Let’s explore this together and bring our stones to the building from a point of view of life-long learners. My initial take on Learning by doing was a kind of short virtuous circle where one takes a bit of formal learning (reading a page, 3 minutes of video), then apply it, then draw some takeaways from it and starts learning one more bite. I was surprised to see that Wikipedia don’t have much on the topic. Not that Wikipedia is the ultimate knowledge source, but it’s a good starting point to get the current consensus. Wikipedia has another use of Learning by Doing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learning-by-doing ) and points to Experiential Learning: Experiential learning is the process of learning through experience, and is more specifically defined as “learning through reflection on doing”. OK that’s again something slightly different. Of course, if I search Google I harvest plenty of material but now it goes in every direction. @JayCross wrote in his latest book “Learn from experience without
instructors or classrooms.
That’s Real Learning.”. So basically we are around something. http://www.internettime.com/2015/10/real-learning-explained-in-graphics/slide04-2/ Now learning by doing don’t imply you share what you do. yet when I see Mel’s practice while learning bootstrap this is what she’s doing. Learn, apply, share, learn, apply, share. I’m both interested by the topic, how she can use it in eLearning and how an Id can learn it (Kneaver is also using bootstrap). This can lead to some interactions and feedback. So Learning by doing + making our doing observable (#WOL) leads to feedback. Sense-making is also a way to learn but not necessarily from courses or learning material. According to Harold Jarche this should include doing and feedback. Again making our work observable if a prerequisite to getting feedback. Hence this idea that Learning by Doing and Doing/Working out loud could form an interesting triangle with Sense-making. This is what I propose to explore. I have no preconceived idea of what could come out of it. PKMChat being about Personal Knowledge Management encompass Knowledge lifecycle in general. Our first chat was about learning, acquiring Knowledge. Our second is about sharing it. Week after weeks we will switch from one end of the lifecycle to another while exploring all the channels that could be used: social, formal, writing, videos.
