Forgetting intentionally or not

Forgetting is a Knowledge related activity like another, just rarely praised. However, there are cases when forgetting is the desired outcome. It could be because the Knowledge has no long-term value like knowing about a deprecated feature of a tool, a technology no more used. It could be because something was just learned for a one time occasion, no retention is desired. It could be because this Knowledge leads or is correlated with habits we wish to stop (recipes using cream or fat), or linked to bad emotions we want to forget. Organizations may want to forget as well. They have an easy option which is to make the corresponding knowers redundant or pushing to retirement. – How much old unused knowledge is an obstacle to learning new things? – Is it possible to forget voluntarily, conscientiously, on purpose? – Can we unlearn stuff, forget about people, bad memories, loose habits? This half-baked post is a brief exploration of the topic. Surely you have your word as well. Good enough there will be only 4 questions and plenty of time to chat in Half Agora Mode. PKMChat being about Personal Knowledge Management encompass Knowledge lifecycle in general. Our first chat was about learning, acquiring Knowledge. Our second is about sharing it. Week after weeks we will switch from one end of the lifecycle to another while exploring all the channels that could be used: social, formal, writing, videos. Feel free to suggest topics by tweeting to @pkmchat.
